What happened to engineered stone?

On December 13, 2023, the Australian federal government took a significant step towards protecting the health and safety of its workers by imposing a ban on the manufacture, supply, processing, and installation of engineered stone benchtops, panels, and slabs. This action addresses growing concerns over the health risks of engineered stone, particularly the development of silicosis, a debilitating and possibly fatal lung disease.

Engineered stone, a popular choice for kitchen and bathroom benchtops, is made from crushed stone bound together by resin. While it offers a cost-effective, durable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to natural stone, the high silica content in engineered stone poses a health hazard. When cut, ground, or polished, the engineered stone releases fine silica dust particles. Inhalation of this dust can lead to silicosis, a condition characterised by inflammation and scarring of the lungs, which severely impairs respiratory function and can lead to other complications.

The Australian government’s ban on engineered stone will commence from July 1, 2024, and includes:

  • Manufacture: The production of engineered stone products within Australia is now prohibited. This measure aims to eliminate the source of harmful silica dust at its origin.
  • Supply: Importation and distribution of engineered stone benchtops, panels, and slabs are banned. This ensures that products containing high silica levels are unavailable in the Australian market.
  • Processing: Cutting, grinding, and polishing engineered stone are banned to protect workers from exposure to dangerous silica dust during fabrication.
  • Installation: Installing engineered stone products in homes and commercial properties is prohibited.

Materials such as natural stone, porcelain, and sintered stone are viable options that do not pose the same health risks. These materials offer durability and aesthetic appeal without the high silica content of engineered stone.

Safety Note: Engineered stone, once installed, is an entirely safe material and can be safely repaired and removed.
